Been almost a year and a half since you left this word Matthew, but it seems like only yesterday. My heart feels so torn apart, can't believe it is still beating, so much has changed and so much has not.I just cannot make sense of it all and I guess I never will. R.I.P. my dear one you will always be my baby boy. |

Born in South Dakota on August 05, 1980. He was welcomed home by his big sister and lil mommy Monica. She adored Matt since we first brought him home. She wouldn't let anyone else hold him-not even me.She was only 5 but she would get him out of his crib every morning and never even came close to dropping him.As he grew she was always just as protective of Matt.They fought like all siblings do but heaven help the person who even looked at her little brother wrong. This is a 1985 picture of the mitchell corn Palace. There were animals of all shapes and sizes hanging up in there. Matt pointed at the smallest one and asked me Mommy did that little one kill them all? I chose this picture as Matt really was in awe of the place. |

Larry John Hansen passed away at the Madison Community Hospital after 2 yrs battling a lung disease. His son Matthew was only 3 yrs.old.Matt mentioned to me not long ago that he remembered sitting in his walker and watching his dad tar the roof.This amazed me as Matt was just a toddler.In the last few months of Matt's life he mentioned Larry a lot.I know he always missed his dad but he yearned more for him the older he got.I know they are both proud of each other and i'm very proud of them both. |

Matthew moved to Alaska from South Dakota.He was 4 years old. He made friends the day we arrived.He was a very outgoing,adventurous ,little guy who didn't miss anything. He was always willing to help even when it wasn't needed.He always had a smile -I believe he was born with it.He started kindergarten at Ptarmigan elementary the following fall and did very well.His teacher said she believed he would be a writer.His teacher was miss Page and he adored her. This is a picture of Beluga Point where Matt spent a lot of his teenage and adult years. |

Matthew started junior high at Clark.He got into journalism and loved it.The clark Jr. High Newspapers took national honors every year as being the best Jr. high paper in America.His sister Monica also worked on the paper when she attended Clark.The two kids also worked in the cafeteria while attending. they had a lot of common interests. |

Matthew graduated from Bartlett high school.Throught the years he made many new friends.He was a very popular boy even though he wasnt considered a "jock".He and his friends were considered a little off the wall but their loyalty to each other was steadfast.Matt marched to his own beat but that's what made him so incredible,and endearing. Matt worked very hard to make up all the credits he needed to graduate and he succeeded. It was a very proud moment for his family and friends! |

Matthew's nephew Joel was born at Providence Hospital in Anchorage.Matt was so proud and tickled to be an uncle.Joel's middle name is Mathew after his uncle Matt. Joel gave Matt a hickey on his chin ! Matt helped gramma babysit when the Erickson family lived in an apartment off Turpin. |

Matts favorite color is dark green.He loved garlic and ketchup on most anything.He made excellent meals but my favorites that he prepared were stuffed pork chops,spaghetti,hash with taters and ground beef,and i am sooo serious when i say this-the best cheeseburgers in the world!!We also had green bean casserole a lot and he always ate 3/4 of it.He hardly ever ate sweets. He taught our dog Auggie later named Oscar how to kiss among other things.He loved to do Variety puzzles and the jumble out of the paper.He was an intelligent man -musta got that from his daddy.To know him was to love him and that will live on! |

I sent Matt to Pa to see a Madonna concert. He had poor seats but befriended a security guard who let him stand beside her.It was in honor of his 21st birthday.He said he had a fabulous time and managed to get a Madonna T-shirt.He flew home to alaska from Michigan on 9/10 2001 one day before 9/11.We always commented on how lucky he was to come home when he did. |

Matt's interests........ Saturday Night Live, Mad T.V., his favorite gray/blue hat. His shoes from Cool Shoes, Value Village. Anything hand-made,anything to do with his Leo sign cept i guess he hated all the stuffed lions i gave him.He thrived on attention but he was a blast to be around. Sunsets, Elderberry park,the northern lights, and ash from Mt. Redoubt which he kept in a bottle and told everyone it was a relative in there. Keeping everything and anything.Lasagna,spaghetti,and burgers. Grilling and sitting on the deck.Enjoyed snail mail more than e-mail.Doing jumbles out of the newspaper.Getting Oscar to do new tricks and teaching him to kiss!Oscar was originally known as Auggie but Matt renamed him!Matt's favorite dog was a black cocker spaniel named Daniel- I think it's because they were both very hyper!!Matt adored kids and he would have made a fantastic father.He wanted to become a Big Brother as he had a friend who had a Big Sister from that program and saw how it enriched her life.He enjoyed "Who Wants to Be a Millionare" and "Jeopardy" and he was great at both.He thought Meredith Vierra was HOT!! |

I hope Matt is also enjoying these photos as he made me an Antonio Banderas bookmark which i treasure.I will never forget you flipping me the bird to see my shocked reaction. Our late night chats,watching Mad tv and SNL at the same time,and sharing laughs.You had plans that we would sit on the deck most of the summer and play Trivia Pursuit.I don't go out on the deck much baby as I have to go by all your possessions-treasures as you would call them,and that breaks my heart.I need you as always to stay by me and make me strong. Matt talked to me a few months before his death that it was very important that we sent up balloons for all our love ones who had died.This gave me hindsight in thinking he knew he wouldnt be earthbound much longer.So on this day sis and many friends sent their balloons heavenward Dark green for Matthew as that was his favorite color.His stepdad and i were with sis and her family so we also released them.Happy first birthday in heaven sweetheart Love,Mom |
